June 2010 Fishing Report And Newsletter
June is a great time to fish Esperanza and Nootka Sound. In 2009 we had some of the best nonstop action for spring Salmon I have seen in 10 years. We typically start to see a few Coho showing up as well, but the last few seasons has had fantastic action for fish in the 5-10lb range starting early in the month.
From the testing of the hatchery fish caught in Esperanza we know that the majority of these fish are heading to US southern waters. The Columbia, Sacramento and Peugeot Sound are all doing a great job with their hatchery programs. I believe the abundance of fish staging in Esperanza has a lot to do with all the bait around. Needle Fish, Needle Fish and more Needle Fish are the main food for these Salmon at this time. Some of the biomasses of Needle Fish we have seen in June out do the pilchards that show up a little later. The name of the game is match the hatch. Needle Fish Hoochies(Squirts) are my top producing lure. Purple Haze, J-79 and Irish Mist are some of my favourite colors. My typical leader length is around 36 inches, but on certain days you may need to adjust. 3.5-4 inch coyote spoons also work well. Silver Blue, Army Truck and mongoose are all good bets. When there are lots of fish around there is no need to run bait, it is just a waste of time and slows you down when you are releasing the smaller fish.
I say I get excited for the salmon action at this time, but there is no better time to take halibut. June is definitely the best month of the year around here for these tasty flaties. You don't have to travel far to get into some of the better eating fish either. From the south side of Low Rock all along the 20-25 fathom edge fish in the 15-40lb range are very abundant. Dragging my same salmon gear along the bottom here has great results for me. It is much more fun catching these smaller fish on your salmon gear than it is on the heavier stuff. Good numbers of bigger fish can be had out at any of the deeper reef edges and rock pile as well.
