Vancouver Island Fall Fishing Report and Newsletter
I would first like to thank everybody who fished with us this past season. Your business is greatly appreciated. The entire summer went off without a glitch, and as usual, the fishing around Esperanza once again proved to be the World Class fishery I am always bragging about.
June was a little off and on with the Salmon fishing. This was a rarity we were not used to after the last few years of incredible Salmon fishing. As always the Halibut and bottom fishing was fantastic. The Ling Cod Fishing this year was some of the best I have ever had. I had Larry Stefanyk from Island Fisherman magazine doing an article with me early in the month. We had two days of great fishing that you can read about after Christmas when the article comes out.
July went down as one of the driest on record. We had sunshine and blue skies the entire month. We also had some of the windiest conditions of the year. Although the wind blew, we had some great fishing on the beach for Salmon that kept smiles on every ones face. Ferrer Point and Catala Island had some spectacular fishing. You just can't beat a big spring salmon smashing your bait at 20 ft and taking line right off the down rigger.
As always August was crazy. The boats didn't get a rest the entire month. The Halibut fishing tends to slow down a little bit at this time, but not this year! The entire season produced unbelievable fishing for these tasty flaties. I don't know too many places where they release Halibut, but we do it quite often, the fishing is that good. The Salmon fishing was very typical of August, LOT'S OF FISH! We had lots of three year old fish returning to Southern and local rivers, as a result of this, we didn't see a lot of the bigger fish that we typically see.
We figured early on that the fish were going to return late this year, and the way September turned out we were right! The first two weeks were the best fishing I have had for big Springs at this time. We had fish over 30lbs on the dock every day and few that made the 40lb mark. The last week of the season we fished with 20-30 Humpback whales putting on one of the best whale shows imaginable. The Salmon didn't seem to mind the whales as we could barely keep two rods in the water, it was that HOT!
The return to the waters around Victoria has been great so far. The Halibut fishing in Victoria has been great. With a handful of trips under my belt I have been able to produce a good number of fish for every group. This last week has seen the Coho fishing start to turn on. With a good number of fish around, there is lots of rod bending action. The average size seems to be up as well with lots of fish in the 10-15lb range. The winter Spring Salmon are also starting to show in their usual spots with fish up to 10lbs being taken.
