August 2010 Fishing Report And Newsletter
The warm weather, the flat sea's and typically the biggest Salmon of the year is what makes August the one month to fish Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Ferrer Point, Pin Rock, and Rosa harbour are major staging grounds for mature Chinook fish entering Nootka Sound and Other Vancouver Island river systems. We are expecting to have the same size restrictions in these areas as we have had the previous two years. What does this spell? This makes some of these spots the best catch and release fisheries on the coast. When these size restrictions were not in place Ferrer Point produced more sport caught fish throughout the year than any other single on shore point in British Columbia. One of my favourite parts of being a guide is releasing big fish. Weather it is Salmon or Halibut there is something I really enjoy about a catch and release fishery. If you could fish one of the hottest Salmon areas on the coast with only a few other boats releasing big fish all day what more could you ask for.
The one issue that comes up with this is releasing these fish properly. If you do not need to net the fish to release it you should try not to. I see it all the time when people net a fish and bring it into the boat to flop around in the net. Once these fish lose their protective slime and scales there is a very good chance that they will incur disease. I feel the best way to release them is to leave them directly in the water. If the hook is deep and the fish is not bleeding I would just cut the line as close to the hook as possible. If you are not comfortable doing it this way, you can still net them and just leave them in the water at the side of the boat. The smaller mesh netting or rubber nets are best suited for this. With high expectations for some big returns this year I am looking forward to releasing many fish this season.
